Who will England play in Euro 2024 last-16? Next opponents confirmed

Must read

England’s fate in the Euro 2024 knockout stages was sealed even before they took to the pitch against Slovenia – but the question of their next opponent still hangs in the balance.

The round of 16 will see the top two teams from each group and the four best third-placed finishers. England, with four points from their first two games, are ahead of the third-placed finishers in groups A and B who have three and two points respectively.

A victory over Slovenia would have secured England’s position at the top of the group, following their win against Serbia and draw with Denmark. However, they were held to a 0-0 draw. So, what does this year hold? Mirror Football has analysed all possible outcomes for Southgate’s squad – including a potential replay of their last-16 match from the previous tournament.

England finish top of the group

Now England have emerged as the group leaders, the path is straightforward. Their round of 16 match won’t take place until Sunday, with Southgate’s team returning to Gelsenkirchen – the site of their initial group stage victory over Serbia.

Who do you fancy for England in the round of 16?

Only the top four third-placed teams will advance, and we won’t have a clear picture until after Wednesday’s final group matches.

Based on the standings after two rounds of games, Austria from Group D and Slovakia from Group E were poised to move forward in third place. However, things can shift quickly, with Austria’s triumph over The Netherlands resulting in the latter finishing third in their group.
