The European Championship in Germany is drawing to a close with only a handful of games to go.
The two semi-finals are in the books. Then the final, on Sunday in Berlin, will follow where the champion will be crowned.
There won’t be a third-place play-off, however, with the losing semi-finalists following other eliminated teams and going straight out of the tournament.
Despite other international competitions, including the World Cup, Copa America and African Cup of Nations, having one that will not be the case for Euro 2024.
Why isn’t there a third-place playoff at Euro 2024?
UEFA decided to scrap the third-place play-off game for the European Championships after 1980.
That year, Czechoslovakia beat hosts Italy 9-8 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in normal time.
After little interest in the game — both in in-stadium attendance and television viewership figures — UEFA decided to stop the third-place play-off for future European Championships.
Are there bronze medals?
Bronze medals were awarded for third place until the game was scrapped in 1980.
UEFA then awarded the losers the semi-finals in 2008 (Turkey and Russia) medals before doing the same again four years later at Euro 2012. Germany and Portugal received them.
European football’s governing body went on to decide that bronze medals would no longer be awarded from Euro 2016 onwards.
Is there a third-place playoff at Copa America?
Yes. The two losing semi-finalists will meet in a third-place play-off game in Charlotte, North Carolina on Saturday.
Colombia beat Peru last time out in 2021 to finish third.
Who is in the Euro 2024 final?
Spain booked their place in the final in Berlin with a win over France in the semi-finals.
Lamine Yamal and Dani Olmo scored the goals in a 2-1 victory in Munich.
They will now face England, who beat the Netherlands with a 90th-minute winner from Ollie Watkins in Dortmund.
